Ambassador György Varga
Ambassador György VARGA from Hungary was appointed Chief Observer of the OSCE Observer Mission at the Russian Checkpoints Gukovo and Donetsk by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office as of the 15th of November 2017.
György Varga has had a longstanding diplomatic career. Prior to his appointment, he held a number of positions as a career diplomat in the Hungarian Foreign Ministry. He was Ambassador of Hungary to the Republic of Moldova (2008 – 2012), Head of the Cabinet Office of the Foreign Minister (2007 – 2008), Deputy Head of the Hungarian Embassy in Moscow (2001 – 2005) with parallel accreditation to Armenia, Belarus and Uzbekistan, Deputy Director of the CIS Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and 2nd Secretary of the Hungarian Embassy to Ukraine (1992 – 1996).
He holds a diploma in military diplomacy and a Doctorate in Theory of International Relations. He attended courses at the George C. Marshall Centre in Germany and at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
In addition to his native Hungarian, he speaks German, English, Russian and Italian.
