Gender equality
Working for peace, security and prosperity requires that all the people in a society are included. OSCE participating States are therefore strongly committed to making gender equality a reality everywhere – at home and in public life, in politics and the military, in the economic and environmental spheres, in every realm of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The OSCE Secretariat’s Programme for Gender Issues provides the OSCE executive structures and participating States with the expertise and operational tools they need to fully implement that commitment. It provides guidance and support to the work on gender equality in OSCE institutions and field operations across the Organization.
One overall strategy to achieve gender equality is gender mainstreaming: taking into account the different needs and perspectives of women and men when designing and implementing policies and programmes.
The Programme for Gender Issues develops operational tools, guidelines, and training materials to support OSCE staff members and stakeholders in integrating a gender perspective in their activities. It organizes events and activities and implements projects on gender equality-related issues. Its work focuses on the following areas:
Combating gender-based violence
Gender in economic and environmental security
Gender equality within the OSCE
